Its Sensor title=" width="1536" height="1024" tx4-s for injection molding barrels: define each heating zone and its sensor title="">
Conceptual single-zone arrangement. The illustrated PV 198 and SV 200 are explanatory numbers, not measured process data or a recommended molding recipe.

For an injection-molding barrel, select a PID temperature controller by the heating zone it will control, not simply by the number of heater bands on the machine. The TX4-S W1T/R-2 has one sensor-input channel for its feedback loop. Each zone that needs an independently controlled temperature must have an appropriately assigned sensor, control channel and heater-switching branch.

A useful purchase specification therefore begins with a zone map: which part of the barrel is being measured, which heaters respond to that reading, and what the process expects from that zone. A controller model alone does not define the complete molding-temperature system.

Map the feedback loop before ordering controllers

A physical heater band and a controlled zone are not necessarily the same thing. Several bands may form one engineered heating branch, while a nozzle may need a separate temperature target. Let the machine’s thermal and electrical design establish the grouping. Do not join independently required zones merely to reduce the controller count.

For a TX4-based arrangement, give each independently controlled loop its own controller assignment. The following is an identification example, not a recommended temperature profile or a wiring diagram.

Zone record

What must be identified

Why it matters

Barrel zone A

Its sensor location, controller tag and assigned heater branch.

The reading and the output must belong to the same intended thermal region.

Barrel zone B

Its own input, switching branch and permitted operating range.

A neighboring display must not be mistaken for this zone’s feedback.

Nozzle zone

The nozzle sensor and heater arrangement defined by the machine builder.

A barrel reading does not automatically represent the nozzle.

Whole machine

Heat-enable conditions, alarm response and independent protective functions.

Individual PID loops do not by themselves define machine safety.

Keep the measured point tied to the correct zone

The TX4 input must match the installed sensor type. The matched manual lists thermocouple inputs K, E, J, N, T, S, R and B, plus Pt100 and Cu50 RTD inputs, with different usable ranges. This is a choice of input configuration, not permission to substitute sensors without checking the application and wiring.

Record the probe type, physical position, contact arrangement and cable identification for each zone. After heater or sensor maintenance, verify that the sensor has returned to its specified position and that its cable still reaches the intended input. A plausible temperature value is not proof that the correct zone is being measured.

As a general thermal-control principle, the controller adjusts heat in response to a sensor measurement of the heated object. The referenced discussion of temperature-control conditions includes molding cylinders and explains how sensor relocation can change the thermal response even when the controller indication appears normal. This supports checking the physical measurement location; it does not establish any additional TX4 functions.

A barrel-mounted sensor reports temperature at that measurement point. Do not describe its PV as a direct measurement of all the molten material inside the barrel or as a guarantee of molded-part quality. Those requirements need the machine’s own process measurements and acceptance criteria.

Specify the switching branch separately from the controller

The controller’s output interface and the heater’s power circuit are different purchasing items. For the matched TX4 manual, the SSR drive is 12 VDC ±2 V at no more than 20 mA. It is a signal for a suitable external switching device, not a supply that can power a barrel heater.

Give the panel builder each zone’s heater voltage and load, the required switching interface and the protective arrangement. The switching device, its heat management and the branch protection must be selected for that circuit. Do not select heater power from the front-panel OUT indication or from the controller’s own supply rating.

The photographed W1 version identifies Alarm 1. AL1 and AL2 on common front-panel artwork are alarm legends, not two extra temperature-control channels. Confirm the full delivered order code when specifying spare units.

Original model photographs support the controller identity. Its long housing belongs behind the panel, leaving the front interface accessible to the operator. It is not a DIN-rail module and should not be placed directly against the heated barrel.

The matched manual specifies an operating ambient of −10 to 50°C and warns against unsuitable heat, vibration and other installation conditions. Check the air around the installed controller inside the actual panel, not just the workshop temperature. Arrange the enclosure and cable routes so hot-machine surfaces do not become the controller’s mounting environment.

A separate nozzle-zone interface illustrates why the panel tag, sensor and heater branch need a consistent identity. The original face is shown unlit; the scene does not validate a temperature profile.

Commission the zones as identifiable loops

Before tuning, qualified personnel should confirm the sensor-to-zone and output-to-heater assignments under the machine’s approved commissioning procedure. Marking the panel, cable and drawing with the same zone tag helps prevent an otherwise convincing but incorrect connection from surviving maintenance.

Next, establish the intended sensor configuration, operating unit, setpoint limits and output interface for that loop. Assess the response under the relevant machine conditions, including how the other zones are being operated. A set of PID values from one position is not automatically appropriate for every barrel section or nozzle.

TX4 auto-tuning can determine control parameters for the connected loop; it does not identify which physical heater or sensor the installer meant to connect. Treat any tuning outcome as part of commissioning that particular assembly. Keep the process temperature profile and startup sequence under the machine builder’s approved instructions rather than borrowing the illustrative readout in an article image.

Finally, define what happens when a sensor, controller or switching device fails. The TX4 manual calls for fail-safe measures where a failure could create a hazardous condition. A normal control alarm must not silently replace an independently required overtemperature protective function.

A zone map should identify the whole feedback loop, not only a controller or heater-band quantity.

What to include in a molding-temperature inquiry

Send the number of independently controlled zones, their location names, sensor types and ranges, heater electrical data, chosen switching interface, controller supply and panel conditions.
