With exactly 12.0 V at the central branch input and a constant 2 A load, the load receives 11.6 V and 23.2 W; a local converter maintaining 12.0 V would deliver 24 W. The equipment’s permitted load-voltage range determines whether either result is acceptable. Do not silently assume a fixed 12 V module can be adjusted to compensate the drop.

If a branch instead behaves as a constant-power 24 W load, use a separate static model: (12 − 0.20 I) × I = 24. The lower-current solution is about 2.072 A, giving approximately 11.586 V at the load and 0.858 W cable loss per branch. That differs from the 2 A constant-current screen above. The equation describes a resistive steady state only; it does not establish control stability or acceptable equipment operation at that voltage.

For final budgets, use actual converter-terminal voltages, measured efficiency at each operating point and the full input/output tolerance. Multiple lightly loaded modules can consume more total power than a central stage. A lower long-cable loss alone does not decide the system energy result. The upstream current and harness-loss budget separates converter input power from external wiring loss; apply that method at the named boundaries of this 48 V system.

Define what happens when one branch fails

List the components shared by all loads. Its stated common-negative connection means that local conversion does not create separate electrical references.

Those entries establish a documentation candidate, not approval of the entire 48 V system. Confirm the actual bus polarity, operating range and transients. A nominal 48 V battery system or a telecom negative 48 V distribution system is not approved merely because its label contains 48 V.

Using the published 120 W rating only as an arithmetic reference, the original nominal 72 W central-stage output corresponds to 60% load, while a local stage delivering 24 W corresponds to 20%.
