Power Supply Thermal Shutdown and Recovery: Internal Trip Temperature Is Not Cabinet Ambient

application a for RSP-250-12

A power supply’s internal overtemperature trip is not the permissible temperature of the cabinet around it. For an OEM investigating thermal shutdown, first identify the specified sampling point, then separate the normal operating envelope from protection and recovery behavior. A protective interruption is a warning to resolve the installation condition—not additional usable thermal capacity.

Source-referenced auxiliary-control application: a shallow enclosed supply fastened to a steel equipment plate, separate from the label path. The scene illustrates a cabinet relationship, not a tested machine compatibility or a performed thermal test.

Three temperatures belong in three different records

Cabinet air, accessible case temperature and the protection circuit’s internal sample are different quantities. Air may be measured at a chosen enclosure location; a case observation is tied to a particular surface; an internal threshold belongs to the manufacturer’s protection description. A number taken from one location cannot be transferred to the other two without supporting evidence.

Start the investigation with the full supplied model and document revision. Record where the reported temperature came from, the input condition, real output demand, installation orientation and whether the enclosure door was open. These context fields are often more useful than a bare statement that “the supply was hot.” Do not open or probe an energized supply to find an internal sample point.

What the RSP-250-12 evidence does—and does not—say

The approved RSP-250 sheet identifies the 12V variant at up to 20A and gives an overtemperature entry of 85°C ±10°C. Its Chinese description places the sample at an internal JK transistor. The same sheet separately lists a working ambient range of −20°C to +60°C. The internal protection value is therefore not permission to operate the cabinet at 85°C.

The sheet describes hiccup protection and recovery when temperature returns to normal. The English website uses different translated protection wording. Neither description provides a measured retry waveform, exact cool-down duration or guaranteed restart time for a particular installation. Request clarification for the purchased revision rather than inventing a timing diagram.

Documentation concept only: keep ambient qualification, internal protection sampling and recovery evidence separate. No temperature trace or tested operating point is being asserted.

Build a useful shutdown investigation packet

  1. Identity: photograph the actual nameplate and capture its full model, output rating and input markings.
  2. Operating record: obtain the equipment’s real steady and changing auxiliary loads, the actual AC condition and the cabinet configuration at the event.
  3. Temperature context: identify the measurement location, instrument and observation interval. Do not substitute a surface reading for an internal threshold.
  4. Installation record: document vent obstruction, neighboring heat sources and enclosure airflow. Compare fastening and orientation with the supplier’s mounting instructions.
  5. Protection interpretation: ask whether the applicable revision’s event description matches the recorded symptoms; consider other documented protections without assuming every interruption is thermal.
  6. Return-to-service decision: have qualified personnel verify the corrected condition and the equipment’s own restart controls. Supply recovery alone does not establish safe machine restart.

This is a documentary sequence, not a procedure for deliberately overheating equipment. Do not disable protection, obstruct ventilation as a test or repeatedly energize an unresolved fault.

A different auxiliary-control setting: an enclosed optical-inspection rack with the supply’s base against an internal steel adapter/backplate. The visible plate screws fasten the plate; they do not prove the hidden bottom-thread engagement. This is a protected-layout illustration, not an approved installation: confirm the delivered revision’s permitted orientation and clearances with the supplier. No accuracy or load-compatibility claim follows from the scene.

Mounting evidence matters before a thermal conclusion

The standard drawing describes a 215mm terminal-to-rear length, 115mm width and 30mm height, with bottom and side threaded fixing options. This is a chassis-fastened enclosed supply, not a DIN-rail unit. An arbitrary rail adapter, unsupported shelf or blocked honeycomb roof should not be treated as an equivalent installation.

For cabinet release, obtain the specific mounting orientation, fastening engagement and clearance guidance appropriate to the delivered revision. Where the public sheet does not state a required spacing, ask for it; a neat illustration cannot create that requirement. Keep conductive debris, tools and unintended contact away from the terminal area.

Do not merge conflicting markings into a new specification

The authentic photographed RSP-250-12 is marked 12V20A, INPUT100–240V/2.5A, 50/60Hz and PowerFactor 0.98. The sheet uses a broader input range and condition-specific current and power-factor entries. These are separate evidence sources, not interchangeable labels. Keep the photographed markings literal and require the supplier to confirm the operating document for the ordered unit before electrical acceptance.

Questions to send with the purchase or support request

Ask for the full-model specification revision; the protection sampling location and tolerance; the meaning of the recovery statement; allowed input/load/ambient combinations; mounting and ventilation requirements; and any recommended inspection after repeated protection events. Provide observations, not an invented diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Does automatic recovery mean the problem is solved?

No. It describes a protection behavior under a stated condition. The cabinet heat source, obstruction or equipment demand may remain unresolved, and the equipment needs its own safe return-to-service decision.

Can a case-temperature reading confirm the 85°C internal threshold?

Not by itself. The documented internal sample and the chosen external surface are different points. Their relationship has not been established by the cited sheet.

Should procurement specify only a trip temperature?

No. Normal operation, installation, protection and recovery evidence should be distinguishable in the acceptance packet. A protection limit cannot replace operating qualification.
