The 5 V load’s 4 A does not become 4 A on the 12 V rail. Record those constraints separately. Also check which loads are active together; a convenient average cannot replace the simultaneous operating requirement.

For a fair direct-path comparison with both loads present, retain the separate 24 V to 12 V path as well. At the same assumed 95% efficiency, that path needs 24 W ÷0.95=25.263 W. Adding 22.222 W for direct 5 V conversion gives 47.485 W from 24 V. Both options now supply the same 44 W of combined nominal load.

For this two-rail example, direct conversion uses one 24 V to 12 V module and one 24 V to 5 V module; cascading uses one 24 V to 12 V module and one downstream 12 V to 5 V module. Both use two converters. Compare the 5 V stage’s input connection, added loading on the 12 V stage and the resulting fault and shutdown dependencies, rather than claiming a different module count. The existing 12 V stage’s additional input draw and heat still belong in the budget.

If the two rails operate in different equipment states, make a state table before choosing the chain. A 5 V function that must remain available when 12 V is switched off cannot depend solely on that switched 12 V rail without a separate, documented arrangement.
