Two common approaches to regulated power are linear and switching designs.

A linear AC/DC supply may use a line-frequency transformer to reduce the input voltage, followed by rectification, filtering and a linear regulator. The regulator dissipates some energy as heat. Not every linear supply uses the same arrangement.

A switching power supply uses one or more switches operated at high frequency, together with magnetic components, filtering and control circuitry. Depending on the topology, it can step voltage up or down, provide isolation, and regulate the output. The components and stages vary with the input, output and design.

WEHO enclosed switching power supplies, as shown in the existing article. These are different ways to classify a supply, so they should not be treated as four mutually exclusive categories.

AC/DC: converts an AC input into a DC output. Many designs first rectify the AC input; the downstream converter then regulates the output.

DC/DC: converts a DC input to a different DC output. The input voltage may be low or high depending on the application and product rating.

Flyback: stores energy in a coupled magnetic component during part of the switching cycle and transfers it to the output during another part. It is often used for lower-power isolated supplies, but output wattage alone does not define a flyback converter.

Forward: transfers energy through a transformer to the secondary while the primary switch is on; an output inductor and capacitor filter the power. The precise circuit depends on the design.

Buck and boost: non-isolated converters can step DC voltage down or up respectively. They do not inherently provide galvanic isolation.

The choice of topology depends on input and output ratings, isolation, efficiency, cost, control and other design requirements. See Analog Devices' discussion of flyback and forward converters.

How Does a Switching Power Supply Work?

For a typical isolated AC/DC switching power supply, an input filter and rectifier prepare power for the switching stage. A high-frequency switch and magnetic component transfer energy, while output rectification and filtering produce DC. A feedback and control circuit adjusts operation to maintain the specified output under its rated conditions.

Switching power supply circuit board shown for component context; this photograph does not identify the topology of every power supply.

The exact sequence varies: power factor correction (PFC) is included only when the design requires it, and non-isolated converters do not have an input-to-output isolation transformer. Every stage has losses, so real supplies consume power and generate heat even when efficiently designed.

Input Rectification

In an AC-input supply, rectification converts alternating voltage into a unidirectional waveform. A single-diode half-wave rectifier conducts during one half of the input cycle. A four-diode bridge provides full-wave rectification, using both halves of the cycle. The rectified output is pulsating DC rather than a constant regulated voltage.

A smoothing capacitor charges near the waveform peaks and supplies energy between charging intervals, reducing ripple on the DC bus. The resulting bus is still subject to ripple and input variation; in an AC/DC switching supply it feeds the converter stage rather than serving as the finished regulated output. Some designs use controlled switches for input rectification; on a converter’s secondary side, synchronous rectification can also reduce conduction losses. Each approach adds control complexity.

Power Factor Correction

A rectifier and bulk capacitor can draw input current in short pulses near the peaks of the AC waveform. PFC reduces input current distortion and improves the relationship between input current and voltage. Active PFC commonly uses a controlled boost stage; passive approaches use passive components. Whether a supply needs PFC depends on the product, application and applicable requirements; it is not present in every switching supply. Texas Instruments describes the input-current behavior and PFC function.

Isolation: Isolated vs. Non-Isolated Switching Power Supplies

An isolated converter uses a suitable isolation barrier, commonly a transformer, to separate input and output circuits. Isolation type, insulation and safety ratings must be verified for the complete product and intended application. A non-isolated converter does not provide galvanic isolation between input and output and may be appropriate where the system design permits it. Neither type should be selected on the basis of the word “isolated” alone; check the relevant product documentation and standards.

Advantages of Switching Power Supply

As with any technology, switching supplies involve trade-offs. Efficiency varies with input, load and temperature.

Compact size: high-frequency conversion can reduce the size of magnetic components, although enclosure, cooling and safety requirements also affect the finished product.

Flexible conversion: different designs can step voltage up or down, supply one or more outputs, or provide isolation when required.

Wide application range: products are available for many input ranges, output ratings and mounting environments. Cost and performance depend on the exact design.

Switching supplies can introduce conducted or radiated electrical noise and may require filtering, careful layout and appropriate installation.
