cannot set your replacement calendar

A machine builder may need to support equipment for many years while a purchasing team wants a simple number for its approved-parts list. A large power supply MTBF figure can look like the answer. It is not enough to decide when each installed unit should be replaced, how many spares to buy or what downtime the customer should expect.

The questions are different. Reliability asks how failure behavior is described for a defined population and set of conditions. Useful life concerns the period in which a component can continue to satisfy the required performance. Warranty states a commercial obligation. Maintenance planning decides how an organization will inspect, diagnose, replace and restore equipment in its own operating environment.

This guide focuses on that maintenance decision, not on ranking supplies by a headline number. The WEHO DRP-240-24 provides a concrete product-identification example. Its photographed sample is marked 24V DC 10A, but neither that rating nor its DIN-rail format establishes the lifetime of an installed fleet. A sound replacement policy needs evidence beyond the label.

Keep four different records instead of one lifespan field

An approved-parts database becomes more useful when it has separate fields for the following items.

Record

What it answers

What it does not establish by itself

Reliability prediction or test result

What failure behavior was predicted or observed under specified conditions?

A guaranteed failure-free period for an individual supply

Useful-life evidence

What aging-related performance boundary was assessed, at which stress conditions?

The operating history of your equipment fleet

Warranty terms

What contractual support and exclusions apply to the order?

A validated physical wear-out threshold

Maintenance and restoration plan

Who will detect a fault, obtain the right replacement and restore service?

The intrinsic reliability of the component

Avoid storing all four as an undifferentiated “life in hours.” That shortcut makes procurement comparisons appear easier but removes the conditions needed to interpret them. It also makes later model substitutions difficult to assess: a familiar voltage and case size do not mean the replacement has the same reliability evidence, repair procedure or support terms.

For fleet planning, preserve the original document beside each extracted field. A revised sheet should not silently overwrite the basis used for an earlier production lot. Record which equipment serials contain each revision, then assess changes against the actual installed configuration.

Understand the statistical boundary before doing calculations

The NIST reliability handbook describes the exponential model as a constant-failure-rate model. Under that assumption, the rate is the reciprocal of the mean, and reliability over a chosen interval is modeled by an exponential relationship. This is a statistical description, not a clock embedded in each unit. NIST exponential reliability model.

This distinction matters when a buyer sees a high number and converts it directly into decades of service. Such a conversion treats the quoted mean as a guaranteed individual endpoint. It also ignores whether the underlying assumptions apply to the equipment’s early-life behavior, wear-out period or changing stresses.

Ask whether a power supply MTBF value is a prediction, a test-derived estimate or a field estimate. Ask for the method, temperature basis, load assumptions and product revision. If it comes from testing or field operation, request the exposure and failure definition needed to interpret it. A short record with no failures is not proof of unlimited life.

NIST also distinguishes the point estimate from confidence bounds for the constant-rate model. An observed zero-failure period therefore should not be reported as an infinite MTBF. NIST MTBF estimation and confidence bounds.

Do not apply a generic calculation to a particular WEHO model without the applicable supplier evidence. This article does not assign a failure rate, survival probability, capacitor life or replacement interval to the DRP-240-24.

Start the fleet record with the exact supply identity

The DRP-240-24 sample used here has a readable front marking: INPUT 100–240VAC 3.5A, 50/60Hz; OUTPUT 24V DC 10A. Its lower interface has seven contacts: L, N and protective-earth marking in the input group, followed by two −V and two +V positions in the output group. These are identity observations, not wiring instructions or proof of suitability for a particular machine.

The retained complete WEHO sheet and mechanical drawing show a 125.5mm front width, 125.5mm height and 100mm depth. The original rear photograph shows its actual DIN attachment and white release part. The current public page has a different dimensional entry, so this illustration does not claim that every ordered revision is interchangeable with the retained sample. WEHO DRP-240 product information.

The retained sheet does not provide a model-specific MTBF or a guaranteed lifetime figure. That absence is important: do not fill the missing field with a value copied from another DIN-rail family, another manufacturer or a marketing overview. Request the evidence applicable to the exact order.

An equipment record should link the full model, installed revision, manufacturing or lot identification when available, supplier acknowledgement and installation documentation. Keep a separate record of the equipment location and service access. This establishes what a technician must restore; it does not turn a photograph into electrical acceptance evidence.

Separate operating exposure from calendar age

Two supplies purchased on the same date may have different service histories. One can spend much of its time in a powered-down machine; another may support a continuously operating control system. Their enclosure conditions, loading and maintenance events may also differ. A calendar-age field alone hides those differences.

For an OEM fleet, define the exposure information that can actually be collected. This may include equipment operating hours, installed location, documented load configuration, ambient observations and events such as a ventilation obstruction or cabinet modification. If the product’s local temperature is not measured, do not label a cabinet-room measurement as a component temperature.

Record unknowns honestly. An estimate of operating hours should be distinguishable from a counter reading. A service technician’s report should state what was observed, not infer internal component damage from the fact that the machine stopped. These distinctions help engineers decide whether units share a common stress history or merely share a model name.

Use service events to improve the plan without overstating the data

A useful service record begins with a consistent event definition. “Machine unavailable,” “DC rail outside requirement,” “supply replaced” and “confirmed supply failure” are not automatically equivalent. A unit may be exchanged during diagnosis even when another component caused the original problem.

Track the reason for removal and the subsequent finding separately. Record the supply revision and equipment identifier, the date, exposure estimate, symptoms, relevant environment observations and the repair disposition. Preserve a “cause not established” category rather than assigning every event to the power supply.

This is an engineering workflow recommendation: grouped records can help identify recurring installation or restoration issues, but they do not by themselves establish a statistically valid model-specific MTBF. Before comparing two populations, check whether their operating conditions, failure definitions and reporting completeness are sufficiently comparable.

Also separate downtime from failure occurrence. A part can be replaced quickly in one machine and require lengthy access, configuration and restart work in another. Improving access and replacement documentation may reduce restoration time without changing the component’s intrinsic failure rate. Report that improvement as serviceability, not as a higher MTBF.

Plan spares around restoration requirements, not a magic interval

Spare quantities should be considered alongside the number of supported machines, acceptable service delay, geographic distribution, actual event history and replenishment arrangements. An MTBF label alone does not determine all of these inputs.

Create a replacement record that tells the service organization which exact revision is acceptable and which checks remain after replacement. Relevant checks may include the documented electrical interface, mounting, ventilation, output setting where applicable and machine recommissioning procedure. The machine builder must define the applicable acceptance process; a familiar casing is not automatic approval.

Avoid assuming that an unused spare will be ready for service merely because it is younger than an installed unit. Retain supplier storage instructions and the required checks before commissioning. Warranty status, storage exposure and installation acceptance should remain distinct fields.

For purchasing, ask the supplier to identify whether a proposed replacement changes the model, revision, reliability calculation basis or support terms. A commercial substitution should not erase the original fleet record. A component-screening comparison, a fleet service forecast and a scheduled replacement policy may need different supporting information.

Request an exact product revision and the conditions behind any reliability figure. For useful life, request the supplier’s applicable aging or lifetime basis, including the operating assumptions and the performance endpoint used. For a warranty decision, obtain the commercial terms rather than extrapolating from reliability data. For maintenance, obtain the machine-specific access and restoration procedure.

If the required evidence is unavailable, keep the replacement interval open instead of inventing one. The responsible engineering team can define a proportionate observation or qualification program, subject to the equipment’s actual requirements. Document its limitations and revisit the policy when reliable operating records become available.

This is particularly important after a design change. A different enclosure, load profile, mounting arrangement or ventilation layout can make the old operating record less representative. Retain the earlier history, but identify which decisions need reassessment rather than declaring all old data either universally valid or worthless.

Principais conclusões

Power supply MTBF is not a guaranteed individual lifespan or a replacement timer.

Keep reliability evidence, useful-life assumptions, warranty terms and the maintenance plan separate.

Use exact model and revision records; do not borrow a reliability number from another supply.

Separate confirmed component failures from diagnostic exchanges and equipment downtime.

Define spares and restoration procedures from the fleet’s actual requirements and records.

Conclusão

The practical question is not “How many years does this MTBF number promise?” It is “What evidence supports this maintenance decision for these machines?” A useful OEM plan connects the exact supply revision to operating exposure, service findings, spare availability and restoration checks.

For the DRP-240-24 example, the retained photos and drawing establish the sampled identity and mechanical context, not a guaranteed fleet lifetime.
