Does a 24V Power Supply Need an SCCR? Review the UL 508A Panel Context

product scene

A 24 V output rating does not, by itself, determine whether a power supply needs an SCCR or how an industrial control panel must be assessed. Identify the circuit’s function, the applicable panel or machinery requirements and the exact component documentation. Then have the responsible panel designer establish which evidence is required and how the complete assembly’s short-circuit rating is determined.

For procurement, the useful output is an evidence request tied to the actual drawing and assessment route. Asking every supplier for an isolated “24 V power-supply SCCR certificate” can miss the questions that determine whether the equipment can be accepted.

1. Read the DC power-supply answer within its context

UL Solutions’ machinery SCCR FAQ explicitly addresses the 2021 edition of NFPA 79. It explains that ordinary DC power supplies generally do not require an SCCR and identifies a converter creating a DC bus for a variable-frequency drive as an exception. It also distinguishes a panel containing only control circuits from one containing a power circuit.

That is useful context, not a universal exemption for everything labeled “24 VDC.” A purchase specification should name the actual equipment, circuit role, jurisdiction and assessment basis. Ask the responsible evaluator how that basis applies to the submitted construction rather than silently extending a machinery FAQ to every UL 508A design.

Record the edition and revisions used for the project. The published UL 508A specific-component requirements resource is maintained separately and identifies an October 2025 document. Its component-acceptance role should not be confused with the complete panel SCCR determination. Obtain the applicable documents for the actual assessment.

2. Classify the circuit before requesting a number

Put the supply on the current electrical drawing. What does it feed? Is it providing control power to electronics, participating in another power-conversion function, or being installed in a construction with additional conditions? The same nominal DC voltage can appear in different roles.

Identify the supply’s AC connection and the associated protective devices as well as its DC loads. A decision about the supply component does not erase the need to evaluate other equipment in that path. Leave classification and any exclusions to the person responsible for the applicable panel or machinery assessment.

Question Evidence to attach Who resolves it
What is the supply doing? Drawing reference, load functions and operating configuration. Equipment or panel designer.
Which requirements apply? Target market, equipment assessment route, standard edition and revisions. Responsible assessment party.
How is the component accepted? Exact model, applicable certification record and documented conditions, where required. Supplier provides records; evaluator determines acceptance.
What other components are involved? Associated protective devices, distribution components and their documented combinations. Panel designer and assessment party.
What is the installation fault duty? Available-fault-current information and its voltage/location basis. Responsible installation and equipment parties.

The supply’s rated DC output current and its electronic short-circuit protection describe different matters from an assembly’s ability to withstand a specified short-circuit duty. They cannot be substituted for the panel assessment. For branch-device behavior on the DC side, use the separate 24 V DC fuse and breaker selection guide.

3. Keep three document levels separate

A component record identifies what was evaluated and under which conditions. An application record shows how that component is used in this equipment. A panel record establishes the result for the complete assessed construction. Each document should have its own identity and owner.

A supplier document is one input to the equipment assessment. This evidence map does not assign a component or panel SCCR. Open full-size diagram.

Schneider Electric’s UL 508A SCCR explanation distinguishes the complete panel rating from the main overcurrent device’s interrupting rating. Its outlined assessment considers relevant components and documented protective arrangements. A large number on the main breaker therefore cannot simply be copied onto a panel nameplate.

For purchasing, preserve the references that let the evaluator trace each relevant item: model suffix, certification file or record where applicable, conditions of use, specified protective-device details and drawing revision. Do not turn a supplier’s general company certificate into exact-model evidence.

4. Review the response, not just whether a field is filled

A blank SCCR field is not automatically a failed supplier response, and a populated field is not automatically adequate evidence. Ask what the number describes, at what voltage, under which conditions, and who established it. If the component is not required to carry that rating in the applicable assessment, preserve the evaluator’s rationale instead of inventing a placeholder value.

Returned item What it establishes Required next step
General UL or CE wording A statement requiring scope and identity checks. Request the applicable exact-model record and conditions; do not infer the panel result.
DC short-circuit protection row The stated source protection behavior under its documented conditions. Keep it separate from assembly short-circuit withstand and protective-device interrupting evidence.
SCCR number without conditions An incomplete rating claim. Request voltage, component/combination scope and the supporting record.
No component SCCR stated A missing field, not proof of either suitability or unsuitability. Have the evaluator determine whether that field is required for this circuit role.
Specified protective combination A potentially relevant construction with explicit limits. Match the exact devices and conditions to the proposed panel before acceptance.

Where current-limiting protection is proposed to support an assessment, request the actual documented combination and the evaluator’s method. UL’s FAQ cautions that adding such a device alone does not establish compliance. Product substitution can change the supporting construction even when its current rating looks similar.

5. Close the review at the panel boundary

The completed file should show the drawing revision, component identities, applicable evaluation basis, required protective arrangement, installation fault-current information and the person or organization responsible for the panel determination. Keep open questions explicit until the responsible party resolves them.

A useful purchasing disposition is specific: the exact supply is accepted for the identified circuit role subject to the recorded conditions, or further evidence is required. It should not imply that buying the pictured supply assigns an SCCR to the surrounding cabinet.
