Buck Converter Module for OEM Equipment: Qualify the Complete Assembly

18 cover

Qualify a buck converter module as part of the equipment assembly, using its exact production specification and installation conditions. The regulator chip’s current rating, a marketplace headline, and a successful bench demonstration do not establish continuous output in your enclosure. For OEM procurement, the deliverable is a controlled module, interface definition, thermal arrangement, and acceptance record that can be reproduced in production.

This guide addresses the gap between a functioning prototype and an approved purchased assembly. It does not select an inductor or design a switching controller. Its main question is whether a proposed DC-DC buck converter module has enough documented and verified support to enter the equipment’s bill of materials.

Identify what the supplier is actually delivering

The word module can mean an integrated semiconductor package, a populated PCB with external terminals, an enclosed industrial DC-DC converter, or an evaluation board. Establish which form is quoted and the operating conditions it actually supports; an industrial label alone is not qualification evidence. Record the manufacturer, orderable part number, hardware revision, output setting, connector or lead variant, and supplied documentation. Two boards carrying the same controller name may use different inductors, capacitors, copper, and cooling.

A reference design helps evaluation but is not a production assembly approval. For example, the external reference design TIDA-050055 identifies an integrated-inductor buck device and supplies a schematic and layout files. Those resources describe that design; they do not qualify an unrelated purchased board with a similar nominal output.

Check any evaluation-board restrictions before planning to purchase it for shipment inside equipment. The external evaluation-module guide includes terms limiting the EVM to development use and excluding incorporation into finished products. Read the actual supplier’s current terms rather than assuming that every board offered for evaluation is a production component.

Freeze the interface before comparing unit prices

Write the input range at the module terminals, including normal source variation and upstream path losses. For a buck converter, confirm the required output remains achievable at minimum input under load. Separate continuous operation, startup threshold, and transient survival. The corresponding limits need not be identical.

On the output side, define tolerance, ripple measurement and acceptance conditions, load steps, startup capacitance, and behavior during shutdown or another source being present. Add mechanical attachment, conductor range, terminal torque where applicable, airflow, and electrical clearances. An adjustable prototype also needs a controlled output-setting method; an exposed adjustment that can drift or be mis-set is a production issue.

What belongs in the purchased-module specification
الحدود Required definition Evidence to retain
كهربائي Input envelope, output limits, startup and fault behavior Exact assembly specification and test conditions
Reference Common return or documented isolation function Pinout and applicable insulation information
Thermal Ambient, load, airflow, mounting and limits Derating information and assembly verification
ميكانيكية Mounting, terminals, harness and adjustment control Drawing and controlled installation instructions
إنتاج Item/revision traceability and change notification Agreed purchase and inspection records

Do not infer galvanic isolation from the presence of an inductor or metal case. Likewise, a component’s regulatory information does not automatically describe the completed equipment. Ask which documents apply to the exact supplied assembly and evaluate its integration against the equipment’s requirements.

Compare heat at the same assembly boundary

Hypothetical comparison: an OEM needs 12.0 V at 3.00 A at the module output terminals, or 36.0 W. Its input envelope is 18–30 V DC. Assume candidate A achieves 92% efficiency and candidate B 86% at the same defined operating point. These figures are chosen inputs, not measurements or WEHO ratings.

Use Pinput = Poutput/η and Ploss = Pinput − Poutput. Candidate A requires 36/0.92 = 39.13 W and dissipates 3.13 W; candidate B requires 41.86 W and dissipates 5.86 W. The difference is 2.73 W in a location where the equipment must remove it. It does not establish a temperature difference without the actual thermal path.

Original power budget for two hypothetical modules
Quantity at the chosen point Candidate A Candidate B
Output power at module terminals 36.00 W 36.00 W
Assumed efficiency 92% 86%
Calculated input power 39.13 W 41.86 W
Calculated module loss 3.13 W 5.86 W
Loss plus 0.080 Ω output-loop heating 3.85 W 6.58 W

The output harness dissipates I²R = 3.00² × 0.080 = 0.72 W outside the module case in either comparison. At an exact 12.00 V module output, the load receives 11.76 V and 35.28 W. Keep module loss and external harness drop separate in the DC load-voltage budget, so thermal qualification and load-voltage acceptance use the correct physical boundaries.

For input-path sizing, candidate A would draw 39.13/18 = 2.17 A at 18 V if the same efficiency held there. That conditional estimate is not a current-limit rating. Obtain efficiency and available output current across the actual input/load range; do not extend a single favorable efficiency point across every condition.

Qualify the mounting and surrounding circuit

Run the module in the intended enclosure, orientation, and mounting arrangement with nearby heat sources active. A large evaluation PCB or open bench can provide cooling absent from the production installation. The external power-module thermal design series explains the role of the package and PCB in transporting heat. Use the selected assembly’s own instructions and temperature limits.

Adding input filters, long leads, large output capacitors, or a different load can also change operation. Freeze the surrounding circuit used for qualification and review later substitutions. The LM76002/LM76003 datasheet, application and implementation section explicitly calls for validation of the customer’s implementation; an IC application circuit does not approve a completed OEM assembly.

Turn a bench pass into repeatable production evidence

Agree on pass criteria before collecting traces. Verify regulation at the load, startup into the real capacitance and demand, recovery from allowed disturbances, and thermal operation at the required corners. Use the production harness and record the input supply behavior. A current-limited laboratory source can hide or introduce startup interactions absent from the final equipment.

Records needed before BOM release
Review item Retained record Hold condition
Identity and documentation Exact part, revision, drawing and specification Supplier cannot identify the tested construction
Functional and thermal test Conditions, limits, traces, temperatures and results Required operating corner remains unverified
Equipment integration Reviewed protection, reference, EMC and installation Module results are being substituted for system results
Production continuity Traceability and agreed change-review process A substitution changes the qualified configuration

Incoming inspection can check identity and agreed functional points. It does not replace qualification, and a short full-load check does not prove lifetime. Link any production test claim to an actual agreed procedure and record rather than assuming it from the product category.

Request a controlled module proposal

Contact WEHO about an OEM buck-converter module through the contact form with the input envelope, output and startup load, mounting and thermal conditions, and required documentation or qualification evidence. Ask which exact assembly can be reviewed against that specification. Confirm its reference or isolation arrangement separately.

A useful comparison ends with a reproducible configuration and a clear list of remaining verification work. Use the OEM power-supply RFQ checklist to keep pricing, quantity, delivery, and change-control terms attached to that identified item so a cheaper substitution does not silently become a different engineering proposal.
