Power Inverter for Power Tools: Match the Startup Event, Not Just the Peak Watts

WHP-1000W-B secured in a service van with an unbranded corded drill stored separately and disconnected.

Choose an inverter for a power tool by matching its continuous demand and its startup event—including duration—to the inverter and DC source. A “2000 W peak” label does not guarantee that every tool below 2000 W will start. The battery, cables, protection, waveform and operating conditions remain part of the same system.

A service-van layout keeps the inverter and stored tool accessible. The disconnected drill is a planning example, not proof of starting compatibility.

Start with the tool’s electrical input

Collect the exact tool model, AC voltage and frequency, rated electrical input, motor or electronic drive type, and any manufacturer information about starting demand. Mechanical shaft power is not the same as electrical input power. A drill, a saw and a tool battery charger can have very different input behaviour even when their advertised wattages look similar.

For tools with variable-speed electronics or soft-start functions, ask how the input behaves with the intended inverter. Do not assume that every electronic control eliminates startup demand, or that all tools of one nominal wattage share the same starting-current multiple.

Separate continuous output from peak capability

The matching WHP-1000-B specification lists 1000 W rated output and 2000 W peak output. The photographed WHP-1000W-B sample carries the corresponding original 12 V, pure sine-wave, 1000 W and “Surge Power 2000W” markings. The available sheet does not provide a peak-duration curve.

This means the continuous rating and the peak number answer different questions. Continuous capability concerns sustained operation under the stated conditions. A peak number without a duration cannot establish support for a particular motor acceleration time or repeated starting pattern. Request the overload-time characteristic or a manufacturer-approved compatibility assessment for the actual tool.

As a general principle, motor startup can exceed an inverter’s current limit and cause its output to fall or shut down. Victron’s inverter manual explains this behaviour for its own products. Its thresholds, automatic-restart settings and timings must not be transferred to a WHP model.

The original unit has a pure sine-wave marking, a 1000 W rating and a 2000 W peak marking. Its actual AC output option must be confirmed separately.

Do not treat watts and volt-amperes as identical

For an AC load, real input power, RMS current and apparent power describe different constraints. A tool can challenge current delivery even when a simple real-watt estimate appears acceptable. Where the tool manufacturer supplies starting current or a current-versus-time profile, retain that information rather than reducing the entire event to one wattage.

The intended AC voltage and frequency must also match the ordered inverter. A universal-style socket is not proof of its output voltage, and an adaptor does not convert frequency or voltage. Verify the actual inverter order configuration before connecting the tool.

The battery must support the same event

At a low DC voltage, even a moderate AC load can require substantial current. For illustration only, a hypothetical 600 W electrical load, 11.5 V at the inverter input and 85% efficiency would require approximately 61.4 A: 600 ÷ (11.5 × 0.85). These are assumed values, not measured WHP performance or a starting-current prediction.

During startup, check that the source and any battery-management system can supply the required transient without an unacceptable voltage dip or protective trip. Size cables, terminations and DC protection from the manufacturer requirements and complete installation conditions. Increasing a fuse rating to suppress trips can leave the wiring unprotected and does not create additional inverter capability.

Treat load startup, inverter capability and DC delivery as one system. A weakness in any of the three can prevent a successful start.

Include the working cycle and environment

A single successful unloaded start is not a complete validation of a tool used repeatedly under mechanical load. Consider restart frequency, tool load, shared appliances and the enclosure’s temperature. Keep airflow paths clear and separate the inverter from dust, moisture and hot exhaust as required by the installation guidance.

Tool stall or binding is an abnormal condition, not an acceptable way to test available surge power. Use the tool’s safety instructions and a competent test plan. Never defeat a guard, protection device or inverter shutdown in order to keep a test running.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 2000 W peak inverter run any 1500 W power tool?

No. For this 1000 W-rated example, a sustained 1500 W input demand already exceeds the rated output. The 2000 W peak marking does not convert it into a 2000 W continuous inverter.

Does pure sine wave guarantee a motor will start?

No. Waveform compatibility matters, but adequate current, duration, DC delivery and thermal conditions are still required.

Can I choose by doubling the tool’s wattage?

Not reliably. A fixed multiplier ignores motor type, electronic controls, startup duration and source behaviour. Use the actual load information and a documented compatibility review.

Send a startup brief, not just a wattage

For a useful quotation, provide the exact tool model and electrical requirements, expected simultaneous loads, starting information, duty cycle, battery voltage range, source current limits, cable route and enclosure conditions. Ask for the inverter’s continuous rating, peak duration and applicable installation limits against that brief.

Review the WEHO inverter range এবং request confirmation for your tool and DC system. That approach turns “Will it start?” into an evidence-based selection question instead of a guess based on the largest number on the label.
