Illustrative lightbox assembly with accessible mounting and cable junctions. It shows a service layout, not a measured thermal result or verified lifetime.

LED driver life expectancy cannot be read from a maximum case-temperature marking alone. A useful lifetime claim must identify the model, temperature condition, load, operating pattern and definition of failure. Keep the case-temperature limit, the ambient-temperature limit and the conditions behind a lifetime estimate as separate requirements.

For a lighting buyer, the practical question is not simply whether a driver turns on inside the proposed enclosure. It is whether the complete installation can meet the manufacturer’s documented thermal conditions throughout the intended operating duty, and whether the required service life is supported under those conditions.

Separate Tc, Ta and the lifetime statement

Information What it tells the buyer What it does not establish alone
Case temperature, Tc A condition at a manufacturer-defined case measurement location The air temperature or a guaranteed number of operating hours
Ambient temperature, Ta A condition for the air surrounding the installed driver The case temperature inside a particular enclosure
Lifetime statement A duration with specified conditions and a stated basis Unlimited operation at every temperature below a maximum rating
Warranty Commercial coverage subject to its written terms A replacement for a model-specific thermal or lifetime assessment

Ο referenced LED-driver thermal design-in guide shows why those distinctions matter. Its thermal section identifies a defined Tc measurement point and relates lifetime to case temperature for the products it covers. That is an example of the documentation to request, not a source of temperature limits, measurement locations or lifetime hours for a WEHO model.

Read the HLG-120-12 label literally

The referenced WEHO HLG-120-12 is labeled 12 V, 10 A and 120 W. Its original label separately shows Tc: 90°C and Ta: 50°C. Those are two different quantities. Do not quote 90°C as the allowed surrounding-air temperature, or rewrite the Ta marking to match another document.

The available family specification also lists a working-temperature range of −20°C to 60°C. That does not resolve the difference with the photographed unit’s Ta: 50°C label. Ask for the applicable thermal specification for the delivered revision before final selection; this article does not broaden the label’s ambient limit or assume that full output is available throughout a family-table range.

The source material used here does not provide a model-specific lifetime-versus-Tc curve, a supported lifetime-hour figure or an unambiguous measurement-point instruction. It therefore cannot support a numerical life prediction for this HLG-120-12. The appropriate next step is to obtain those details, not to borrow a curve from a similar-looking driver.

Original product reference. The label distinguishes case and ambient temperature; it does not supply a model-specific lifetime-hour curve.

Define the installation before planning a temperature check

Document the intended LED load, supply condition, daily operating hours, enclosure arrangement and nearby heat sources. Include the real mounting surface and the access covers that will be present in service. A temperature observation with the enclosure open does not by itself represent the same driver behind a closed sign face or service cover.

Ask the manufacturer to identify the correct measurement point and measurement procedure for the exact revision. Do not choose an arbitrary label location because it is easy to reach, add a fictional Tc mark to a drawing or treat an infrared view of an unspecified surface as a documented acceptance result. Have qualified personnel plan any energized measurement with suitable access and electrical precautions.

The evaluation should represent the relevant operating conditions and allow temperatures to stabilize according to the agreed procedure. Record the electrical load, local ambient condition, mounting arrangement, measurement location and observed case temperature together. A number without that context is difficult for a supplier to interpret and difficult for another engineer to reproduce.

A different display-service arrangement retains the original flange mounting. The scene does not establish enclosure temperature, transport qualification or operating life.

Request evidence that matches the service-life requirement

Start with the project’s required duty rather than a generic headline such as “long life.” A continuously illuminated sign and a display used for limited business hours have different operating schedules. Send the actual schedule and enclosure information to the supplier and ask what lifetime data applies to the proposed model and conditions.

  • Identify the full model and construction revision covered by the data.
  • Request the temperature, load and operating conditions associated with any stated hours.
  • Ask how failure is defined and whether the statement describes a statistical expectation, a design objective or another basis.
  • Confirm the intended mounting conditions and any derating or installation restrictions.
  • Keep warranty terms, service access and replacement planning separate from the lifetime calculation.

Do not turn a general temperature rule of thumb into an exact prediction. Without a supported model relationship, a lower observed temperature does not justify inventing a new hour rating. Likewise, operation below a maximum Tc marking does not automatically prove that the project’s required service life has been achieved.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tc: 90°C mean this driver can operate in 90°C air?

No. Tc and Ta must not be interchanged. The referenced label separately states Ta: 50°C; obtain the delivered revision’s applicable instructions and resolve the family-document discrepancy before selection.

Can the product’s IP67 marking establish a thermal lifetime?

No. An ingress-protection marking does not supply lifetime hours, a temperature curve or an approved mounting-temperature relationship.

Can a successful short bench run prove the required life?

No. A short observation can support a defined functional or thermal check, but it is not evidence of a multi-year service life. The lifetime claim still needs its stated basis and applicable conditions.

Build a useful thermal enquiry

Send the exact model, label photograph, LED load, enclosure drawing, mounting details, local ambient range, duty schedule and desired service interval to WEHO. Request the delivered revision’s Tc location, thermal limits and available lifetime evidence. That produces an actionable selection discussion while keeping temperature limits distinct from promises about years of use.
