C3Z Washdown Procurement: Verify the IP Claim and Cleaning Duty Separately

For a washdown machine, procure against the actual cleaning process, not a loosely stated IP rating. Confirm the exact sensor’s declared ingress protection, water temperature and pressure, detergent exposure, connector/cable arrangement and post-cleaning conditions. An IP67 claim must not be treated as automatic approval for high-pressure, hot-water or chemical cleaning.
For the pictured C3Z-D100N, the matched specification and WEHO product page do not state IP67. They specify non-condensing conditions and a PC sensing surface. Therefore this article does not qualify that sample for direct washdown; it explains the evidence an OEM needs before selecting a wet-zone sensor.
Divide the machine into real exposure zones
Identify sensors directly struck by cleaning jets, sensors exposed to splash, and sensors in genuinely protected dry areas. Include the cleaning state, not only normal production. A sensor behind a guard can still be exposed when the guard is opened for cleaning or when water collects around the cable entry.
A protected location may change the exposure, but a cover by itself is not a qualified environmental enclosure. Record the cover/enclosure arrangement, drainage, optical opening and cleaning access in the machine drawings and validate the completed arrangement. Do not silently assign the enclosure’s rating to the sensor inside it.
Write a cleaning-duty specification
| Condition to specify | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Water pressure, temperature, distance and duration | Applicable sensor/enclosure tests covering the proposed exposure |
| Detergent, disinfectant and concentration | Material and seal compatibility for the actual cleaning agents |
| Hot cleaning followed by cool operation | Condensation and thermal-cycling assessment |
| Cable entry, connectors and service replacement | Ratings and installation instructions for the complete interface |
| Cleaning frequency and maintenance practice | A defined sample endurance/inspection plan, not a lifetime promise |

Separate ingress testing from chemical durability
Water-test ratings do not identify which detergent can contact a sensing lens or which cleaning temperatures the material tolerates. The original C3Z sheet identifies PC at the sensing surface and operating humidity of 35–85% without condensation. It supplies no chemical-compatibility or direct-washdown acceptance record.
Separate an IP67 enclosure claim from a claim for high-pressure cleaning or suitability for food applications. Request the supporting rating, cleaning-duty description and test evidence for the actual sensor. A general specification category or another product’s test result does not qualify a WEHO sensor.
Make missing evidence a purchasing hold point
If direct cleaning is required, request a model-specific declaration and supporting test conditions before approving the sensor. If the supplier cannot substantiate the exposure, select a qualified alternative or redesign the protected location with the machine integrator. A photograph of a dry installed component is not environmental-test evidence.
Keep the supplier’s written model/revision confirmation with the approved sample and machine BOM. For repeat orders, inspect the full model, cable-entry form and source documentation. A visually similar product or an added generic “waterproof” sticker is not a controlled substitution.

Define the acceptance test for the assembled machine
Agree on cleaning exposure and electrical/optical inspections before the test. Check the sensor and its interface for moisture damage, material change, loose mounting and changed detection behavior using the actual target set. Repeat the relevant present/absent checks after the specified cleaning cycles and service procedure.
The applicable test plan and pass criteria should be established by the project team. Do not infer a universal cycle count, lifetime or hygienic certification from an ingress code. Keep washdown suitability separate from food-contact or machinery-safety requirements.

Prepare the environmental RFQ
Send a cleaning-process sheet, sensor position photographs, optical target details, enclosure/guard drawings, cable arrangement, target market and expected order quantity. Ask WEHO for exact-model environmental evidence and suitable alternatives. The current C3Z-D100N documents can support its stated dry, non-condensing conditions; additional claims require additional evidence.
Buyer questions
Is the C3Z-D100N confirmed as IP67 by the supplied material?
No. That rating is not established by the matched sheet or the verified product page used here. Obtain a model-specific statement before putting IP67 into the purchase specification.
Does a protected cabinet automatically solve the problem?
No. The optical opening, cable entry, drainage, heat and maintenance state still have to be evaluated as a completed installation.
