Laser Machine Power Supply: Separate the S-350-12 Auxiliary Rail from the Laser Source

S-350-12 proposed auxiliary electronics integration in a laser-marking equipment service drawer

Last updated: October 10, 2026

Quick answer: A power supply for laser equipment needs an assigned electrical role before it needs a model number. Keep a proposed auxiliary DC rail separate from the laser source and its driver. The WEHO S-350-12 example is identified as 12 V, 29 A; those markings do not establish laser operating current, optical output power, module compatibility or a safety function.

Name the interface before requesting a quotation

A laser machine can contain control electronics, motion equipment, a laser source and other subsystems with different electrical requirements. A purchasing description that calls all of them “the laser power supply” can hide which interface the offered component is intended to serve. Start with a functional block description, not an assumed connection.

For this article, S-350-12 is a conditional example for a separately specified auxiliary DC rail. No downstream model or acceptable voltage window has been supplied. It is therefore not a recommendation to connect this supply to a laser module, controller or motion drive. The equipment owner must first identify the actual receiving interface and its requirements.

Separate three equipment records

Record Question to resolve Authority required
Auxiliary DC receiver Which exact electronics need the proposed rail, under which states? Controlled receiver and equipment requirements
Laser source or module What power input, driver and control interfaces does that exact source require? Applicable laser-source manufacturer documents
Equipment protection and release Which system functions and acceptance decisions apply? Responsible equipment design and safety review

These records may refer to the same machine, but one cannot substitute for another. An auxiliary supply label cannot answer the laser-source interface question. A module document cannot establish the entire machine’s protective arrangement. Keep unresolved fields visible rather than copying familiar values from a different build.

A general DC rail is not itself a laser driver

The distinction is especially important for laser diodes. Thorlabs’ laser-diode operating guidance explains that appropriate driver control of operating current and voltage is needed; a simple voltage supply arrangement is not a substitute. This general principle does not identify a compatible Thorlabs product for S-350-12.

Keep driver requirements with the exact laser source. Do not convert the supply’s 29 A marking into a laser-current setting, or treat a larger available supply current as permission to increase emission. Likewise, the S-350 family name is not an optical wattage. This article provides no laser connection, adjustment, calibration, bypass or energized operating procedure.

Retain the exact supply identity without expanding its role

The WEHO S-350 product page lists the S-350-12 option as 12 V and 29 A. The photographed front label carries the same output identity and physical input markings of 115 VAC/6.5 A, 230 VAC/3.4 A and 50/60 Hz. Condition-specific public input-current entries are separate source fields, not replacements for those markings.

The retained complete drawing gives a 215 mm front-to-rear body depth, 115 mm terminal-front width and 50 mm height. The housing has nine covered contacts, a roof fan guard and original chassis fixing positions. It is not a DIN-rail enclosure. The illustrated assembly cannot prove hidden fastener engagement, receiver compatibility or a thermal result.

The source also has an input selector, an output adjustment and a fan-control notice. Their presence does not establish a selected input setting, an approved adjustment target or a cooling result for a laser machine. None of those questions is resolved by calling the component an auxiliary supply.

Give engineering a receiver-specific request

For the auxiliary branch, identify the receiving electronics, required voltage window, relevant operating states and applicable equipment drawing. If startup, transient or simultaneous loads matter to that interface, request the controlled evidence needed to assess them. Do not invent a universal margin or assume that the nominal label alone covers every state.

For the laser-source branch, request the exact manufacturer’s input and driver interface documentation separately. Identify whether the proposal concerns an auxiliary rail, a module input or a dedicated driver. Until that distinction is resolved, a quotation for a general supply should not be presented as an accepted laser-source solution.

Release the role with the equipment revision

A useful BOM description names the exact supply and its intended interface role, then links the receiving requirements and equipment revision. If a laser source, receiver or wiring architecture changes, review which records remain applicable. A supply retained from an earlier build does not automatically retain the same approved role.

The two fresh application illustrations show protected, dry, preconnection equipment contexts. Their labels and geometry support component identification, not proof of successful marking, alignment, laser emission or interlock operation. Keep the actual acceptance method and authorized result separate from the proposed layout.

Key takeaways

Specify what the power supply for laser equipment is intended to feed. Use S-350-12’s exact identity only within that bounded proposal, distinguish auxiliary DC from the laser source and driver, and obtain receiver-specific requirements before release. A recognizable supply, nominal voltage and available current are not a substitute for the laser manufacturer’s interface documents or the complete equipment review.
