Power Supply Transport Vibration: Match the Test Specimen and Protocol to the Shipment

WEHO LRS-75-48 real chassis fit and conditional 48 V interface in wire-stripping machine dispatch bay

A power supply transport-vibration claim is useful only when it names the specimen, the shipment configuration, the test method and the acceptance criteria. An OEM buyer should distinguish a bare supply, a populated machine panel and a packaged machine before comparing reports.

These are different mechanical systems. A supply screwed into a machine can experience the panel’s response; loose units inside a carton are affected by cushioning and restraints. The transport record must identify what actually moved during the test. A photograph of tidy packaging, or an isolated “vibration tested” line in a quotation, does not close that question.

Define the specimen before choosing a protocol

Start with the delivered full model and revision, then describe the state in which it travels. Is it an individual boxed unit, a master carton of units, a populated control panel or a complete machine on a skid? Include the restraints and packaging configuration in the record. Do not apply a report for one configuration to another without a documented review.

The WEHO example here is the LRS-75-48: an enclosed chassis supply with a nominal 48 V / 1.6 A output. Its complete drawing gives 99 mm overall front-to-rear length, 97 mm terminal-edge width and 30 mm base-to-roof height. The drawing identifies bottom and side M3 fixings. It is not a DIN-rail product.

These facts define a physical specimen, not its transport qualification. The WEHO English LRS-75 page and the approved sheet support the model and envelope, but no route-specific vibration report is supplied with this illustration. The unit is used to explain what an OEM should request, not to imply a passed standard.

Wire-stripping-machine dispatch illustration: the exact supply is chassis-fixed inside the separate electrical bay, with guarded terminal routing. The conditional 48 V interface remains subject to documented receiver qualification. Its installed configuration and machine restraints would need to be defined before selecting a shipment test. No transport test or machine power acceptance is shown.

Separate packaged-product methods from specimen vibration methods

ISTA’s official procedure guide separates screening, partial-simulation and general-simulation approaches. Its 1-Series is not an environmental simulation; its 3-Series addresses transport hazards associated with specified shipment types. A procedure number therefore has to be read with its stated scope, not as a universal stronger-or-weaker badge.

IEC’s public summary of IEC 60068-2-64 describes broadband random vibration and relates acceptance to the relevant specification. It primarily addresses unpackaged specimens, while also discussing container or packaged-product cases. That summary does not supply a universal power-supply spectrum, duration or pass limit.

Ask the laboratory to identify the applicable current method and edition for the intended article and distribution system. This guide uses public scope information only; it does not reproduce a complete standard or select a mandatory test for every shipment. Do not take a random-vibration method named on a component sheet and silently substitute it for a complete transport-package procedure.

Question Evidence to request Unsupported shortcut
What travels? Photographs and controlled description of the actual specimen and restraints A model name without its installed or packed state
Which environment is represented? Shipment route, handling mode and method-selection rationale The same procedure for every distribution system
What test was applied? Method edition, axes, profile, duration and other specified conditions “Tested” without the controlling procedure
What makes it acceptable? Predefined functional and structural criteria with a traceable result An undamaged outer box or an output lamp alone

Keep the delivered revision visible

The exact LRS-75-48 photograph carries nominal 100–240 VAC / 1.52 A, 50/60 Hz input and 48 V / 1.6 A output markings. The broader family sheet is a separate revision-attributed record, not a reason to rewrite the physical sample. Preserve the delivered identity and confirm the ordered revision. This article does not infer a connected machine load, transport test or installation approval from the label.

Also record the real five-position terminal arrangement—L, N, protective earth, −V and +V—its clear guard and the source-specific chassis fixing. Do not replace the unit with a look-alike housing or add a rail adapter to simplify the photograph. If a mounting bracket or harness is part of the shipped product, its identity and attachment belong in the specimen description.

Retain the source photographs, approved mechanical sheet and delivered serial or lot traceability with the report. A later enclosure, terminal cover or mounting change deserves an explicit applicability review rather than reliance on the earlier model string.

Specify acceptance before testing, not after damage appears

Engineering and procurement should agree what the test is intended to resolve. Define the configuration, permitted mechanical condition, electrical checks and disposition process before the specimen is submitted. Use the responsible design authority and qualified laboratory to determine the actual procedure and safe inspection sequence.

For an installed machine panel, distinguish housing damage, fixing displacement, harness damage and functional deviations. Each observation should identify its location and the relevant criterion. The supply’s nominal output is not itself a complete machine acceptance specification, and a brief no-load voltage reading cannot establish all functions.

For a packaged product, retain the complete specimen state and the checks required by the selected method. Record exceptions and interruptions. If the packaging, fixture or test configuration changed, state which result applies to which version; do not merge the favourable observations into a fictional single passed test.

Compare reports without inventing a severity ranking

A longer vibration duration does not by itself establish a more representative shipment test. The specimen state, vibration profile, mounting, axes and acceptance conditions can differ. Compare those fields before comparing the word “pass.” Where they are not comparable, request clarification rather than treating the reports as interchangeable.

Keep transport qualification separate from operational vibration and shock requirements. A machine’s installed environment may create a different question from its packaged journey. Neither record should be used to imply the other without an engineering applicability assessment.

The decision record should state the shipment covered, the controlled configuration, the selected procedure, the test result and any limitations. Change control should identify the circumstances that reopen the decision, such as a new packaging design, harness revision or distribution mode. This is a qualification boundary, not a guarantee that no shipment can be damaged.

Frequently asked questions

Does the LRS-75 dimensional sheet prove vibration compliance?

No. It defines the product envelope and fixings. A relevant test report and its applicability record are separate evidence.

Can an individual-unit report cover a populated cabinet?

Do not assume so. The cabinet, mounting and harness can change the specimen. Ask the responsible engineer to assess the report’s scope.

Should the buyer choose the longest test duration?

Not by duration alone. Compare the method, profile, specimen and acceptance conditions against the intended shipment.

Can this article provide the complete test procedure?

No. Obtain the applicable current procedure and qualified laboratory instructions. This article explains the purchasing evidence questions, not a substitute test specification.
