Protective Earth Continuity: Specify the Endpoints and Record the Result

Source-referenced shallow LRS-35-24 flush on a continuous horizontal tool-presetter control-compartment deck

“Earth continuity passed” is incomplete without the two endpoints, the applicable procedure and the recorded result. For equipment procurement, protective-earth continuity should be a traceable verification record—not an assumption made from a green-yellow conductor, a metal housing or a mounting screw.

This guide uses the authentic WEHO LRS-35-24 as a conditional 24 V auxiliary-supply specimen. Its original photographs identify an earth-marked terminal, nominal ratings and screw-fixing geometry. They do not prove a completed protective-bonding test, a particular equipment protection class or certification of either illustrated machine.

Identify the equipment and the applicable verification basis

The official description of IEC 60204-1 addresses electrical equipment of machines and includes revised protective-bonding requirements and terminology. Its machine-equipment scope is relevant background for an OEM record, not a universal test recipe for every standalone power supply. The responsible engineer should identify the applicable requirements and edition for the delivered equipment.

Record the machine or assembly identity, its electrical drawing revision and the protective-bonding arrangement to be verified. If a power supply is only one component of the assembly, keep the supplier’s component evidence distinct from the equipment-level verification. Neither should silently be presented as the other.

Illustrative tool-presetter dry control bay: the exact shallow LRS-35-24 sits flush on a continuous horizontal chassis deck, with the five source-correct front clamp entries. It shows a conditional auxiliary branch, not a measured protective-earth result or approval of a complete machine.

Class I / Class II wording needs a declaration, not a guess

When a purchase inquiry uses “Class I / Class II power supply,” request the supplier’s actual protection-class declaration and applicable evidence for the exact construction. Do not infer a declaration from an earth symbol, CE mark, plastic part, metal case or a withstand-voltage row. Keep the equipment’s protection design and the component’s declared requirements identifiable in the file.

Do not remove an earth connection to make an illustration fit an assumed Class II description. Likewise, do not call an output-negative clamp “earth” because it is convenient to route a wire there. The photographed LRS-35-24 has distinct input L, N, protective-earth, negative-output and positive-output positions. Preserve that distinction in the drawing and supplier discussion.

Name both endpoints before looking at a result

A continuity record should identify the protective-bonding points it actually covers. Use controlled drawing references, component or panel identifiers and an unambiguous location description. “Case” can be too vague when an assembly contains several exposed metal parts, removable panels or separate subassemblies.

Ask which endpoint pairs were required by the approved verification plan and which were tested. Record any part that was excluded and the engineering basis for that exclusion. A result at one pair of points should not be copied to all other points, and a photograph showing a connected earth conductor does not establish the result at its far end.

Mounting hardware is part of the construction record, not a measurement on its own. Preserve the specified bonding arrangement, hardware and any relevant surface or connection requirements. Do not assume that every painted interface, plate contact or screw-fixed joint supplies the intended protective path simply because the components look mechanically secure.

A distinct folding/stitch-machine control compartment uses the same exact supply on a continuous horizontal chassis deck in a lower-right dry bay. Only a conditional auxiliary electronics branch is illustrated; no sewing-drive load, protection class or continuity-test outcome is assigned.

Keep the procedure and the measurement together

The test method, instrument, applicable settings, preparation and acceptance criteria belong to the approved equipment verification procedure. Obtain them from that procedure and the responsible qualified personnel. This article invents no test current, resistance limit, duration or universal pass value, and it is not an instruction to test a live mains assembly.

The result record should identify the equipment used, its relevant status, the tested endpoints, the actual readings, date and responsible person. Where the procedure requires additional observations, retain them. A “PASS” entry without the underlying scope and result can conceal an untested point or a procedure mismatch.

Keep protective-earth continuity separate from insulation-resistance and withstand-voltage evidence. These documents address different verification questions. A withstand row in the supply sheet cannot fill a missing protective-bonding measurement, and a continuity record is not an insulation-class certificate.

Unchanged authentic LRS-35-24 source detail preserves the original front full-model/rating label, hexagonal roof ventilation, adjustment controls and guarded terminal arrangement. Product identity is not a completed safety verification.

Bound the actual LRS-35-24 source facts

The source label identifies LRS-35-24 and nominal 24 V, 1.5 A output, retaining its original direct-current line graphic. It prints AC input of 100–240 VAC, 0.74 A, with 50/60 Hz. Broader operating-range rows in the approved family sheet remain separate, attributed statements; they are not silently substituted on the physical sample label. The series-name prefix is not used as an exact model-level power claim.

The mechanical drawing maps an 82 mm front-terminal span, 99 mm front-to-rear depth and 30 mm body height. It shows two bottom M3 fixing positions with a 3 mm maximum thread-depth note, and two side M3 positions with a separate 5 mm maximum note. The unit is not a DIN-rail supply. Its actual earth-marked clamp, enclosure and fixings can be identified in the equipment documentation, but their appearance does not establish a tested resistance or finished-equipment approval.

For an actual tool presetter or folding/stitch controller, confirm the auxiliary interface voltage, documented current demand, protection and installation requirements. Do not assign a main motor or every machine load to this supply merely because a 24 V controller appears in an illustration.

A protective-bonding handover that can be audited

Field Required purchasing/engineering evidence Gap to resolve
Identity and scope Exact assembly, drawing revision and applicable verification plan Component evidence presented as machine verification
Endpoint pairs Named locations and planned coverage, with justified exclusions One vague “case-to-earth” entry
Procedure Approved method, conditions, instrument and acceptance basis A copied threshold without an applicable source
Actual result Recorded readings, observations, date and responsible person A pass claim without a measurement record
Change control Disposition of modified hardware, wiring or assembly revision An old result carried into a changed build

Evidence flow only: declared scope → endpoint pairs → approved procedure → actual recorded result. No fabricated reading, threshold or test certificate is shown.

Request current model documents through the WEHO LRS-35 family page, then keep the component evidence and the equipment verification plan clearly separated. A good handover exposes exactly what has been demonstrated and what still needs qualified review.
