MEAN WELL NDR-120-24 Alternative: A WEHO Sample Qualification Plan for OEM Retrofits

NDR-120-24 candidate in a precision coil-winding machine dry electrical bay

A MEAN WELL NDR-120-24 alternative is not qualified by a matching family name. For an OEM retrofit, compare the exact delivered specimen, its revision-controlled documents and the machine’s acceptance criteria. This guide uses a photographed WEHO NDR-120-24 as a candidate for investigation, not as an approved drop-in replacement.

The first purchasing question is often simple: can another 24 V DIN-rail supply fit an existing controls cabinet? The answer becomes less simple when a line stop, a changed input range or a missing interface creates more work than the component saves. Start with the installation you actually own. Identify its AC source, the 24 V branch, the connected loads, the usable rail and the enclosure conditions before comparing suppliers.

Keep the reference product and the candidate separate

MEAN WELL’s own NDR-120 specification is the reference document for its product. WEHO’s English NDR-120 page, the exact sample label and the approved complete WEHO sheet are evidence about a different manufacturer’s candidate. A shared NDR-120-24 designation does not transfer a protection response, approval, terminal assignment or test result between them.

The authenticated WEHO sample shown here carries NDR-120-24, 24 V / 5.0 A, and 100–240 VAC, 2.6 A, 50/60 Hz on its front label. The output label uses the original direct-current graphical symbol. These are literal specimen markings, not a declaration that every similarly named unit has the same input configuration.

Item de comparaison Evidence to retain Release question
Manufacturer and full model Separate nameplates and separate controlled data sheets Is the purchased variant exactly the one evaluated?
Supply input Actual site range, candidate label and corrected supplier revision Are the minimum and maximum operating conditions explicitly covered?
24 V output branch Steady and transient load records, wiring losses and acceptance limits Does the real branch remain acceptable throughout the machine cycle?
Mechanical integration Three-axis envelope, rear mounting, duct and door clearance Can the unit be installed and serviced without a cabinet compromise?
Interfaces and requirements Exact terminals, required alarm contacts and project documentation Is every required function documented rather than inferred?

Resolve an input-document discrepancy before ordering

There is an important boundary in this WEHO evidence set. The physical label states 100–240 VAC; the approved complete sheet lists a broader input range; the current English product page contains a different input row. Those records do not establish one coherent guaranteed range. Do not choose the widest figure and treat it as an advantage in a cross-reference table.

Ask the supplier for a corrected, dated specification tied to the exact full model and delivered revision, together with the nameplate to be supplied. Record which input conditions the OEM needs and have the supplier answer that requirement explicitly. Until the discrepancy is resolved, the candidate remains a sample-level procurement investigation. A matching output rating does not close this gate, and a photograph cannot establish full-range input performance.

The same discipline applies to generic marketing text. This verified sample has a metal enclosure and a front DC OK indicator. A website description of a plastic case or a DC OK relay is not evidence that those features are present on this particular specimen. If an existing machine expects a dry alarm contact, require explicit terminal and interface documentation rather than connecting to an indicator by analogy.

Measure the whole envelope, not only the front width

The complete WEHO mechanical sheet defines a 40 mm front width, 125.2 mm upright height and 113.5 mm front-to-rear depth. These axes matter: depth is the full distance to the rear mounting plane, not the thickness of the visible front panel. A narrow front can still conflict with a wire duct, cabinet door or terminal bend.

Check rail position, rear engagement, vertical placement, conductor access and the surrounding enclosure together. Leave the actual ventilation path clear and obtain the supplier’s installation conditions for the revision being purchased. Similar nominal dimensions are a useful screening input, not proof of identical latch geometry, required clearances, allowed orientation or thermal performance.

A useful retrofit record contains photographs of the old and candidate installations, a drawing of the available space, and a list of cabinet changes. Avoid accepting a replacement that fits only when wiring is squeezed into vents, the rear rail passes through the apparent side of the enclosure, or the terminals cannot be reached safely.

Compare terminals by function and real conductor entry

This source sample has four upper DC screw-access positions, marked left to right −V, −V, +V, +V, and three lower positions for protective earth, N and L. The conductor openings are distinct from the round front screwdriver-access cavities: the DC conductors enter from the top; the AC conductors enter from below. Confirm the supplier’s permitted conductor preparation and the terminal instructions before assembly.

The printed torque value on this sample is 9 Lb-in. Preserve that value in the specimen record, but do not copy it to another maker’s device or normalize it into a generic terminal rule. Equally, do not assume that repeated positive or negative terminals authorize extra current, parallel supplies or a particular distribution topology. The complete machine circuit and the selected unit’s documented limits still govern.

PCB-depaneling-cell illustration: the candidate is rear-DIN mounted in the protected side electrical bay during mechanical-fit inspection, before electrical termination. Its seven terminals are actually unconnected and a service light supports the fit check. The scene does not establish cutter-drive compatibility, an energized installation or a verified wiring design.

Test the real 24 V branch before production release

Inventory the connected control loads instead of dividing a machine’s total power by 24 V. Separate mains-fed drives, low-voltage logic and any other supply rails. For the actual 24 V branch, record operating current across its cycle, simultaneously switching loads, voltage at the far end of the harness, and the equipment’s acceptable limits. Use those measured requirements to define the evaluation, not an invented machine load.

The OEM’s acceptance procedure can then cover relevant startup, normal-cycle and abnormal-condition checks under controlled conditions. Use qualified personnel and the machine’s documented safety process. Obtain the candidate’s permitted environmental conditions and any required derating information before defining the test envelope. A smooth demonstration cycle alone does not establish lifetime, protection equivalence, EMC compliance or suitability for a different enclosure.

Illustrative sample-qualification scene, not a test result: an NDR-120-24 is shown on a workbench with instruments and hardware around it. No measurement, test condition, fixture or acceptance outcome is depicted. The model identity and its ratings come from the complete source sheet.

Give purchasing a clear release status

Use three distinct statuses: candidate identified, sample evaluation complete, and approved for a defined installation and revision. Attach the supplier’s clarified documents, the exact specimen identity, the mechanical-fit record and the accepted test results to the purchase release. Specify how later revisions or substitutions must be handled. Do not turn an internal shortlist entry into an unqualified compatibility statement.

For this guide, the status is candidate identified with a document discrepancy requiring supplier clarification. The photographs and application illustrations explain what must be checked; they are not evidence that a replacement program has completed acceptance.

Frequently asked questions

Is WEHO NDR-120-24 a direct replacement for MEAN WELL NDR-120-24?

This article does not establish that. The full models belong to different manufacturers, and this WEHO evidence set includes an unresolved input-document discrepancy. Qualification must be for the actual installation and supplied revision.

Does 24 V / 5 A prove compatibility?

No. It is one output-screening fact. Input conditions, load behavior, mounting, interfaces and project requirements need separate acceptance.

Can the DC OK indicator replace an alarm relay?

Not by assumption. Require a documented contact interface if the machine needs one. The photographed front indicator is not proof of an available dry contact.

What should be requested from WEHO first?

A corrected specification and nameplate tied to the exact delivered model/revision, with a clear answer to the required input range and installation conditions. Keep that response with the sample and procurement record.
